Chelsea must sign a new centre back this month – Talk Chelsea

Wesley Fofana could now miss an entire season at Chelsea once again, according to Maresca. That is crushing news and absolute madness with the money we spent on signing him.

I’m gutted, truly gutted.

However, it seems that Fofana himself is disagreeing with Enzo Maresca’s diagnosis on his injury.

L’Equipe are reporting that some people believe that Maresca is displaying such pessimism on Fofana because he wants to put pressure on the club to deliver him a new centre back this window. The player believes that he will be back ‘well before the end of the season.’

They go on to say that Chelsea’s medical staff and some internally have suggested Fofana undergoes surgery and would miss at least 3 months. However, Fofana has said no and declined.

All seems a bit messy huh?

Without going much more into all of that now though, Chelsea MUST simply attack the centre back market RIGHT NOW. We can’t just replace Fofana, we have to upgrade what we have at the back, sign a dominant and experienced centre back as soon as possible.

The Aaron Anselmino situation is just odd. We heard that he will be assessed by Enzo Maresca and could still go on loan. But Maresca has been speaking like he is 100% staying, but at the same time, says he is not ready to be in the first team and needs to settle in the UK first. So are we not counting him as an option for cover? Surely we are? He needs to go on loan in my opinion; the only way to develop is to play. Keeping him around the U21s I guess is one plan they have, but I think he needs a senior loan move. Part of me thinks that he will actually just come in and be a first team player though to cover the Fofana injury, whether he is out all season or not.

There is a lot of situations that could effect all of these though so we have to wait and see how they all unfold – Axel Disasi being one.

Josh Acheampong finally got a start on Saturday and played very well as expected. So maybe he will now the the answer and relied on regularly? However, I still believe we need to add in another dominant and experienced centre back to help them all and solidify our back line a bit more.

Honestly, if we want to keep this top four challenge going then we need to go out and sign a top centre back right now.
