Last Sunday’s league defeat to West Ham United marked the end of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United reign with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking interim charge.
His tenure brought two trophies but the football on display was dire at times with a lack of a proper style with senior players often puzzled by the selection calls.
And his signings were not too great either with the club’s transfer activity drawing ridicule and ire in equal measure. One of his weakest signings has been Antony who has struggled to justify the club’s huge outlay.
He was signed for £86 million in Ten Hag’s first summer and after a mixed debut campaign, his sophomore season was a disaster while he has hardly had a look-in this season.
Antony’s future
And with Ruben Amorim’s impending arrival, the Brazilian seemed to be destined for the scrap heap but there could be a change in plans.
As per Football Insider, the Portuguese is open to giving the winger a clean slate and the 24-year-old will effectively be playing for his United career once he regains fitness.
“Antony will get a clean slate at Man United under new manager Ruben Amorim, sources have told Football Insider.
“United had been willing to listen to offers for Antony going into the January window, with a move more likely than not, but now his Old Trafford career has been given a lifeline.
Lifeline under Amorim
“Sources say Antony will be one of several players fighting for their future as Amorim heads in at Old Trafford.”
The Red Devils were open to moving him on in the summer but no concrete bids arrived and a loan exit was blocked. There have been murmurs of a January exit but Amorim’s wing-back system could potentially have a use for him.
He remains under contract at the club until June 2027 and his wages have proven to be a stumbling block in United’s attempts to move him on.
INEOS will hope the player can come good or else, they will have to incur a huge loss with the right-winger’s current market value plummeting to €20 million.
