After a dreadful start to the season claimed Erik ten Hag’s job, Manchester United brought in Ruben Amorim to try and take the club back to the promised land.
The Portuguese is expected to adopt a vastly different tactical approach to that of the Dutchman and that was already seen in his first training session.
United’s big-name stars have been blown away by the former Sporting Lisbon boss’ self-belief but Amorim is no magician and he will need backing from INEOS in order to succeed at a place which has proved to be too big a job for many before him.
However, after splurging over £600 million during the former Ajax coach’s tenure, the new co-owners will need to tread carefully in order to avoid falling foul of PSR concerns.
January plans
They have already informed the new coach that he will not get a huge war chest in January and business could be centred around loan deals at best.
And that is why, as per CaughtOffside, Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Athletic Bilbao’s silky midfielder Oihan Sancet.
Villa are prepared to splurge in the winter to land the Spaniard ahead of the Red Devils. The 24-year-old is a major goal threat, something United are sorely missing, with the player scoring five goals in 10 starts this season.
He can play in an advanced midfield role and given his age, he can be a long-term solution for any club. The Bilbao star has a release clause of €80 million, something even Villa will find hard to trigger in January.
Villa in the lead for Sancet
“Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Man United has begun and he’ll likely be looking to strengthen his squad in January, however, it’s possible he’ll lose out on one particular target to Premier League rivals, Aston Villa.
“CaughtOffside sources indicate that the Midlands-based outfit are in the box seat with regards to potentially tying up a deal with La Liga giants, Athletic Club, for their highly-rated attacking midfielder, Oihan Sancet.
“Though sources have advanced that the Villains are likely to make a significant bid in the upcoming January transfer window, it’s understood that Sancet has an €80m release clause which will make any deal difficult.”
The Villans are certainly in a much more advantageous position as compared to the Old Trafford side and Unai Emery is slowly but surely building a young and dynamic team.
