Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, has provided a word of caution for breakout star Kobbie Mainoo.

Both players lit Old Trafford up last weekend as they each scored spectacular goals in the contest.

Mainoo has been a sensation in this campaign since his impressive full debut against Everton in November.

His mature and skilful performances have delighted fans and pundits alike and his fine form saw him called up to the England squad in March.

The 18 year old is now seen by most as United’s most important midfield option and stands a strong chance of being selected for England’s senior Euro 2024 squad this coming summer.

Quite the meteoric rise for a player who was sharing his time between the club’s under 18s and 21s this time last year.

However, according to his captain, the youngster may not find next year so easy.

While speaking on The Athletic’s Talk of the Devils podcast, respected United journalist Andy Mitten claimed that he had heard some comments Fernandes had made about Mainoo after the match against Liverpool.

“It’s interesting, I was listening to Bruno Fernandes after the game speaking to ViaPlay Norway”.

“He was talking to them about Mainoo and about, obviously he’s had a fantastic impact on the team this season, but he was talking to him about what comes next”.

“When you’re first in the side and first at this level, you’re a surprise to people. There are elements that are easier for you because no one knows anything about you”.

“It might not come this season, but it may come next season that it gets a little bit tougher for Kobbie because people know your game, and they know how to stop you and they’ve got different plans for you and ultimately different ways to go about nullifying your effect on the game”.

“But he was also saying, he’s humble, he’s hard-working, he’s smart, he’s talented and he feels like he’ll be able to work it out”.

This was perhaps already on display when Brentford’s midfield nullified the influence of the youngster quite effectively at the end of March.

However, Alejandro Garnacho has shown how it can be done as he has transformed himself from an off the bench spark plug player to a bona fide number one attacking option in less than a year.

Being so young, it is normal to expect Mainoo’s performance levels to drop at some point as the tolls of playing so much topflight football for the first time in your career is bound to have an effect on someone’s body.

Luckily, as Fernandes suggests in the interview, the Stockport native seems to have the character and skillset to deal with these challenges and United fans can look forward with great anticipation to how their young gem will progress over the coming years.
