Former Manchester United keeper David de Gea continues impressive rebirth at Fiorentina – Man United News And Transfer News

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has made a fine start to life in Florence for Fiorentina.

The Spaniard spent 12 years at Old Trafford, making 545 appearances for the club in all competitions.

His career at United came to an abrupt end in 2023 when he was not offered a new contract and Erik ten Hag decided to bring in his former keeper at Ajax, Andre Onana, despite the Spaniard having won the Golden Glove award for most clean sheets in the Premier League in his final season.

De Gea famously spent an entire year without a club where he was linked with almost every team under the sun.

The shot-stopper did finally make a decision on his future in the summer when he joined Serie A side Fiorentina.

De Gea has played 10 games for the Italian side since joining the club and did not get off to the best start, conceding seven goals in his first three games.

He did save a penalty for his new side at the end of August and since then has enjoyed much greater form at his new stomping ground.

In his last seven matches for La viola, he has conceded just three goals and kept four clean sheets.

His best showing probably came against AC Milan in early October where Fiorentina eked out a 2-1 win against their illustrious opponents.

He made seven saves in the match and an incredible two penalty stops.

The Spaniard kept up his fine form and on Halloween played a vital role as his new side won 1-0 away to Genoa.

To preserve the victory, he made four saves and prevented 1.66 goals according to Sofascore, including miraculously clawing the ball out of the top corner in the final minute of stoppage time.

His form between the sticks has been a big reason behind Fiorentina’s rise this season as they sit 4th in Serie A, only three points off Scott McTominay’s Napoli at the top of the tree.

Former Fiorentina keeper Gianluca Berti has already praised the player in the Italian media claiming he “needs no introduction” and he has already had a “major impact” on the football club in such a short period of time.

De Gea will next be in action when his side welcome Verona to Florence tomorrow afternoon.
