India are gearing up to face New Zealand in the first Test of the three-match series, set to take place from October 16-20 at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, a significant concern has emerged for the home team as Shubman Gill’s availability for the match is in doubt due to a stiff neck.
Shubman Gill’s fitness woes
Gill has reportedly been dealing with neck stiffness and has spent much of his recent training sessions under the care of the team’s physiotherapist. With his fitness in question, the Indian team management has remained tight-lipped, neither the head coach Gautam Gambhir nor captain Rohit Sharma addressing the issue during the pre-match press conference.
Gill has been in impressive form recently, scoring a century in India’s second Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, which was his third hundred of the year. His earlier scores of 104 and 110 against England at home solidified his place in the No. 3 position in India’s batting lineup. Losing him would be a significant blow for the team as they look to start the series on a strong note.
Sarfaraz Khan or KL Rahul to step in?
If Gill is ruled out, Sarfaraz Khan is the most likely candidate to replace him in the playing XI. The 26-year-old made his Test debut earlier this year against England, playing three Tests and scoring 200 runs at an impressive average of 50. Sarfaraz has been in strong form domestically as well, recently smashing a double century for Mumbai in the Irani Cup against the Rest of India. His performance and versatility have earned the admiration of skipper Rohit, who may consider promoting him to the No. 3 position in the batting order.

Another option India could explore is bringing KL Rahul into the No. 3 spot, with Sarfaraz batting at No. 6 after wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Rahul, who has also shown the ability to perform in various positions, could provide stability in the top order if required.
Team India’s dilemma
With Gill’s fitness still uncertain, the Indian management faces a tough decision in finalizing their lineup for the first Test. Whether Sarfaraz or Rahul gets the nod at No. 3 will depend on Gill’s recovery and the team’s strategy heading into the crucial series opener against New Zealand. Fans and cricket pundits will be eagerly awaiting the final announcement of India’s playing XI.
