Nathan McSweeney had an interesting domestic season ahead of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. The youngster was given the opportunity to showcase his talents on the international level. However he failed to impress in the Test matches against India. The Australian selectors had enough from the young opener and his name was axed from the Australian squad ahead of the final two Test matches. McSweeney has now reacted after being dropped from the team.
Nathan McSweeney’s dream of playing a Boxing day Test shattered
On being asked about his feelings after being dropped from the Australian team ahead of the Boxing day Test match in Melbourne, the 25-year-old told Channel 7, “Devastated, I get the dream come true and then didn’t quite work out the way I wanted.”

The disappointment of a missed opportunity was clearly visible in his words, “If you don’t take an opportunity and you’re not performing, your position’s never safe. I missed out a few times and unfortunately wasn’t able to take my opportunity, but I’ll work really hard to make it count next time.”
The young Australian opener was, however, optimistic about the future and revealed that he will be working hard in the nets.
McSweeney’s impressive first-class record during 2023-24 season
McSweeney is the skipper of Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL) and has taken his domestic side to BBL title glory during the 2023-24 season. Following his success with Brisbane, he was named the captain of South Australia ahead of the first-class season. His recent record in first-class Australian cricket speaks volumes of his potential as a future prospect for his national side.
McSweeney scored with an impressive average of 40.97 during the season and scored three hundreds for South Australia. Another youngster Sam Konstas has been given an opportunity for a potential dream debut against India. Konstas was part of the PM’s XI squad that played a warm-up game against India and played an impeccable 107-run knock off 97 balls earning him the player of the match.
